Château Lamothe-Castéra
Perfectly located in the Entre-Deux-Mers area, 80 km from Bordeaux, in bastide region, the Château Lamothe-Castéra is a well-known place since the middle of the 15th century in the town of Roquebrune. Today Renaud and Claire JEAN exploit this property of 75 hectares of vines in AOC Bordeaux and Bordeaux superior. This old vineyard is an association of a blend of the three main grape varieties of the region, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. The winemaker couple also owns two other estates: Château de Marjolaine and Château Saint Seurin de Léviac.
About the vineyard
Near by the Atlantic Ocean, at the 45 ° parallel, Château Lamothe Castéra is located in the heart of Entre-deux-mers and enjoys a temperate oceanic climate. The vines are planted on the hillsides on the central plateau of this very undulating area in order to avoid the humidity present in certain zones further downstream.
The diversity of this clay-loamy soil with areas of grave in some places, allows the blossoming of the vines of the region. Approximately half of the red grape vines grown is Merlot, the rest is spread with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.
About the winemaker
Renaud Jean is a sort of rebel in his field. A few years ago, in the face of the constraints related to the Bordeaux and Bordeaux superior defense and management organization (ODG), and especially to the cumbersome nature of the specifications (densities, grubbing …), he decided to deliver entry level wines with cabernet Sauvignon based with high quality.
Apart from easing production rules, he has built up his approach with the aim of segmenting the offer and, above all, connecting the consumers’ needs with the production potential of the vineyard.
